In 19th century Northumberland, the family of Thomas Mallen, Squire of High Banks Hall, is involved in a series of scandals and romances. Mallen faces financial ruin, and is also confronted with the problems of his wastrel son Dick, and his illegitimate child Donald Radlet. Donald marries Contance Farrington, but she loves Donald's brother Matthew. Squire Mallen rapes Constance's sister Barbara, who dies in childbirth.
