Daily Mail, 23 April 1999, by Christopher Tookey "Take the great escape from this tosh" ----------------------------------------------------------- "The Brylcreem Boys" (12) Verdict: Memorably trashy prisoner-of-war drama IIIII (no stars). "The Misadventures Of Margaret" (15) Verdict: Comedy that's a misadventure in itself IIIII (no stars). Those of a sensitive disposition may also wish to avert their eyes from "The Misadventures Of Margaret." The heroine is a sluttish American authoress (Parker Posey). Imagine Erica Jong with the sex appeal of a decomposing squirrel who's understandably bored with her English husband, a patronising professor (Jeremy Northam, sporting designer stubble in place of a personality). She tries to satisfy her seven-year itch with a bisexual girlfriend with the dress-sense of Danny La Rue (Brooke Shields), a priapic dentist of dubious extraction (Alexis Denisof) and a French lump who would be more at home cavorting about on Eurotrash (Patrick Bruel). A lot of informal sex takes place in formal gardens, but its not so much natural and earthy as weedy and over-the- topiary. It's enough to leave one nostalgic for the sophistication of "Carry On," "Don't Lose Your Head" and the smooth, sexual allure of "Sid James." The production notes for the Press reach new heights in hubris for their effrontery in comparing the film to the great screwball comedies of the Thirties. First-time British writer-director Brian Skeet has, presumably, learned from making the movie, but why this misconceived, miscast, miserable effort is being inflicted upon the public is hard to fathom. Unlike "The Brylcreem Boys," it isn't even unintentionally funny. ----------------------------------------------------------- Bentley's Bedlam http://www.BetsyDa.com/bedlam.html This website is for information and entertainment purposes only and is not intended to infringe on copyrights held by others.
